Chesterton High 1979 Bulletin Board

Read Only Format  I apologize about the idiots who post their trash ads here. It's one of the downfalls of a free internet. I try to clear them off every couple of days. For those who continue to post the annoying messages here: BEWARE. We have our class lawyer Rich Ryan documenting all violations and we will prosecute!

We continue to get trash messages posted on this site. To stop this irritating trend, I have cut the link to post messages.   Please email me if you would like a message posted!  hackypat@aol.com

My name is Al Zorn (CHS class of 1977).  I'm part of a team that is contacting former CHS speech team members for a big reunion celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Speech and Debate program this year (http://www.thechslegacy.myevent.com/).   We're trying to let as many people know about this one-time event that will bring together participants from all 40 years of the program.  I'm responsible for contacting members of the class of 1979 and in my search I stumbled across your page (http://www.chestertonhigh79.com/).

If you were involved with the Speech and Debate program at CHS and are interested in this special event please contact me via email or by phone,  I live in Naperville, IL, but I get over to Chesterton/Valpo occasionally since I still have family in the area.

Thanks in advance.

Hi-
Many of you -- at least half of you guys -- had my dad, Gerald Wenzel for PE
at Westchester Middle School.
He died a few days before Christmas 2007, surrounded by all of us immediate
family members; we'd planned to celebrate Christmas that day.
Dad was a hardass to a lot of you, but was greatly mellowed by age and severe
bout of a rare form of Leukemia, which he survived -- barely -- through a clinical trial protocol at Mayo Clinic. At the end he'd been moved to the gorked out section of Waters of Duneland;
his last lucid words were, "Get me the hell out of here." He died within a
week. My mom, who you may remember as the school nurse at CHS, did most of his care from his leukemia and onward. She is relieved to be free of the stress and strain of the job, and we wish her health and some good years and independence and some fun and freedom. She loves her job working at the public library.
I hope your memories of my father are good ones; he truly loved his job and
small town life.
~jean wenzel

Just in ! case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things..
The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1987
They are too young to remember the first space shuttle blowing up on liftoff.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.
The CD was introduced the year they were born.
They have always had an answering machine.
They have always had cable.
They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or "de plane, Boss, de plane".
They! do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is.
McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.
Do you feel old yet? Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list, Notice the larger type, that's for those of you who have trouble reading

Hey all! Just thought I'd give you an update... I left the ministry that I was with and have alligned myself with several independent ministries and am opening a counseling center in Chesterton. I feel I can help more people that way. It's a great life and a great feeling to do something with purpose rather than what one group of people expect me to do. So, if there are any of you out there who find life's problems getting a little hard to handle just email me at revjbsii@hotmail.com. I'll do what I can. Take care.

Ken and Anne

You know you're living in 2005 when...

1.  You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

2.  You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.

3.  You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

4.  You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5.  Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.

6.  You go home after a long day at work you still answer the phone in a business manner.

7..  You make phone calls from home, you accidentally dial "9" to get an outside line.

8.  You've sat at the same desk for four years and worked for three different companies.

10.  You learn about your redundancy on the 11 o'clock news.

11.  Your boss doesn't have the ability to do your job.

12.  You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home.

13.  Every commercial on television has a website at the bottom of the screen.

14.  Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

15. You get up in the morning and go online before getting your coffee.

16.  You start tilting your head sideways to smile. :)

17.  You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

18.  Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

19.  You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

20.  You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a #9 on this list.

AND NOW U R LAUGHING at yourself.
Go on, forward this to your friends ...you know you want to!

Rev. Brad Sagarsee revjbsii@hotmail.com

February is upon us and this weekend is Valentines Day weekend named after St. Valentine. We take this day as a time to remember and to recognize our love and affection we have for those in our lives (wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends, and others). I would like to extend this Valentines wish to all those who look back on the cheesy cards we've given during our elementary years, the shoe boxes decorated with crate paper hearts and aluminum foil, and the candy hearts with food color messages handed to our latest crush. Most of all, I wish this Valentines Day strengthens the love you have for those close to you and makes new memories of glad times for you to look back on as the years pass by. May God shine His blessings on us all.

Hello All: I just wanted to let everyone know that I was overwhelmed in December with a check from Tammy Burton Tice. First of all the Class of 1979 donated money to sponsor 1 whole year of the website, secondly classmates including Jim Crawford, Sandy Johnson Boos, Kirby Miller and Kathy Shook donated their refunded money from the reunion to the website. We missed you folks at the reunion, but appreciate the support. Finally, Tammy Burton Tice, who donates so much of her time and effort into our class also gave us a nice financial gift to the website! All gifts totaled at $430.00!!! Thank you all for your support to keep this site up and running. PS: I am trying to remove the trash adds every couple of days. If you have to post a message and you are sandwiched between adds for swingers and jewelry, don't worry. I'll take them off and leave yours up when I check! Sorry for the annoyance. Pat

14:14:36

Hello everyone, I read this site periodically to catch up on what everyone is doing with their lives. lately, I've been reading a lot of porno stuff (on this site of course). Where's this nonsense coming from? To those who read this, be advised, do not post any more trash on this site. I'll be watching, if I see it again I will hunt you down and bring you to justice! On that note I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Rich Ryan

P.S. Don't forget to contribute to the site. Although Pat has a great job and makes more money than any of us, it's just not fair he pay for it alone. So all the doctors, lawyers, and scientists I've read about in our class please be generous this holiday season, and make a contribution to our web master.

Hi Shawn-- Sorry about the brewpub. Somehow I managed to endure 8 days in the midwest without a "real" beer, but was relieved to get back to my home in the microbrewery capital of the world, Portland Oregon. On a sadder note, my father, Gerald Wenzel, is in Waters of Duneland nursing home for rehab and living while he is getting well enough to go home, which may be never. If anybody who remembers him as a gym teacher at Westchester Middle School wants to drop him a card, The address is 110 Beverly Drive, Chesterton, IN 46304. Or a call (keep it short, he tires easily) 219- 929-4248. I know he really appreciates hearing from his former students and loves to talk abuot football. Any gesture would mean so much to him and to all of us in his family. I don't know if anyone heard, but in 1984 he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and since the diagnosis was terminal, he chose to be test subject for treatment at Mayo Clinic. He survived, but his health was wrecked. Thanks -- jean

In response to Jean Wenzel's request for info on my brew pub. Sorry, you're a little late. The Glen Ellyn Brewing Co. is no more (at least as far as a brewpub). We sold the business about a year and a half ago, and it was turned into a brewpub sports bar, that unfortunately, quickly failed. I appreciate the interest, though. It was a fun business in a lot of respects, but the low pay (even as a brewmaster/manager/partner!) and crazy restaurant hours were eventually enough to drive me back to corporate America, at least for now. A saying still worth repeating: "So many beers, so little time".

Hello everyone, I ran into this site by posting my name in classmates.com and a gentleman by the name of David Canright (CHS Class of '68) send me an e-mail stating that CHS class of '79 has its own website (how cool is that). You guys probably don't remember me because I attended Chesterton High for just for my senior year. I played Football and ran Track (got a Letter in the process) and later heard that both coaches have passed away. I made great friends and still have fond memories from the experience. Tony Yocum wherever you are THANKS for taking me under your wing and showing me the town, introducing me to a lot of people (and I mean you knew everybody), you help me make the transition from Puerto Rico to Indiana - Fun and painless. I did had small sting with the Air Force in 1987 (21 hours of Flying, 32 take-offs and landings) but they told me I was too dangerous and sent me home. I now live in New York, happily married with 5 kids (Three girls and twin boys). It been 18 years since I was last in Chesterton and even thought I will not remember many names and/or faces (we all look so much different). I am very interested in attending the 25th reunion, and look forward in meeting everybody all over again.

Hi all! Just surfed in from a link in an e-mail I got from Reunions.com (which I just joined 2 weeks ago.) I haven't seen any of you since our 5-year reunion. I left "the Region" in 1980 and I've moved a couple of times since then & never updated my address with the class. Glad we found each other after all this time. The website is great! Thanks for all the effort, Pat. I enjoyed reading the postings on the Bulletin Board and looking at the pix from the 20-year reunion (Didn't recognize a single person! Had a few guesses, though. "Isn't that......maybe not.)I'll have to dig out my Singing Sands now and try to do some comparing. Living in southern Indiana now, working for Uncle Sam (Federal Court system). Never married (yet), no kids [that i know about ;-) ], current main hobby: British sports cars. I hope to make it to the 25th. I'll e-mail Tammy with my contact info. Take care.

It's great to scroll through this web page and see old familiar names! I have been away from Indiana since high school, now living in the Los Angeles area. Would love to attend the 25th reunion if possible. I still have family in the Chesterton area. Would love to hear from Teresa Davis (don't know her married name) if anyone knows where she is. I am married with two young children - Sarah (6yrs) and Michael (3yrs). I have a wonderful husband - Simon. We love visiting Indiana as it is relaxing for us. Take care, everyone!

Hi Everyone, We will need to meet very soon to start getting addresses together and finalize the reunion plans. I will get a meeting planned so we can get together the first of November. Let me know what would be good for you. Many classmates have requested dinner and dancing and would like to meet somewhere the night before. We would like your ideas. The show "Classmates" contacted me from Los Angeles. They would like to know if anyone has a long lost school love they would like to re-connect with or a friend you haven't been able to find. You may contact them at < www.classmatestv.com >. I did see the show this morning at around 3:30am. Good Luck! Maybe your story will be featured.

It's great to hear about a 25 Year reunion. Looking forward to trying to remember faces. Tammy Tice helped me with that earlier this month when we were in town for 10 days. It has been a long time since I have seen any of you and hope to see you next July. See you then. Celine

Good gracious! You people must have WAY TOO MUCH free time on your hands. This is an impressive site. Just reading about all the work that you guys have poured into the 25th reunion planning makes my head spin. Air... Need air. I hope to make it to the reunion on the 3rd. We'll see if I'm out of the country again. July isn't necessarily the best time to be in Siberia - the mosquitoes are the size of buicks.

GREAT to hear there will be a 25 year reunion! What do you all think if we have Karaoke at the reunion? Does Rolling Sound have that? I was at the 20 year one in 1999. I live in Valparaiso and work fulltime at Mcgill Bearing Company, and partime as a cashier at Meijer store in Michigan City. I have been married once, but have been divorced for several years now. I have a daughter who is 14 years old. I invite anyone from our class to email me! valpojohn@webtv.net

Tammy and others working on the reunion committee, thanks much for getting things going on the 2004 25th Reunion. I thought the Strongbow turned out fine for the 20th back in 1999, so I would imagine that will work out good again. I've got a little better perspective on what it takes to get a reunion going, let alone to make it successful, since my wife was on her class 20th Reunion committee this past year. I appreciate your efforts and look forward to seeing many of you at the 25th.

The Reunion Committee met on 2/13/03. After reviewing the information, we decided on July 3, 2004 at Strongbow's. Rolling Sounds (Ozzie Moody) will provide the music. We are planning a Buffet Dinner with a cash bar. Tickets will be approximatley $45.00 per person. Please start sending your home and e-mail addresses to tammy.tice@valpo.edu and any ideas or requests you may have. Thanks to Julie (Goslin), Donna (Graham), Michele (Skeds), Debbie (Fleming), and Roxann (Atchison). Thanks to everyone that submitted ideas and information. The information for Sand Creek Country Club is the following: 1. There is a $1,000 dollar deposit for confirming a room. 2. The room holds about 250 people. 3. On the sandcreek website -www.Sandcreek.com- is dining and pricing information. I talked with the one of the managers and she explained to me that it would be best for us to look at the website to get an idea of choices of dinners and prices. Also, if one of our classmates is a member, then we can use the $1,000 deposit toward the food and beverage bill. Look forward to the meeting, kathy

Hi Guys, Tammy asked me to post the information about Michigan City Holiday Inn as a possible class reunion site. They do have 7-3-04 open. Their ballroom holds up to 250 people. There is a $500 deposit required to reserve the ballroom. There is, however, no fee to reserve a block of rooms. Persons wishing to stay in reserved rooms would need to pay a deposit on their room with their own credit card. All we need to do is let them know, in advance, how many rooms we would reserve. Buffet prices range from $19.95 per person with a choice of 2 entrees, 2 salads and 2 accompaniments, as well as dinner rolls, beverages and one dessert, to $23.95 per person for 3 entrees, 3 salads, 2 accompaniments, dinner rolls, beverages and one dessert. Price for bartenders are $65.00 per bartender for the first 3 hours. We would need 3, as they recommend 1 per every 75 people for a price of $199 and $10.00 per bartender for each hour thereafter. Hors D'oeuvres are extra and would range from $17.00 per 50 pieces to $110.00 per 50 pieces per order for cold and $12.50 to $75.00 for hot. Sorry havent done the math on that one. Will have all of the information in writing at the meeting. Hope to see you there. Roxann

Yesterday, February 1, the USA had another tragic event. The loss of Columbia and seven lives. The day started out very typical for me, but I had to go to my Space Center office for a few hours of work. Since I began my career at the Space Center in 1987, I have witness countless launches of manned and unmanned vehicles. It is a thing that people living on the Space Coast do. I remember when the very first space shuttle was given the OK to land at Kennedy Space Center, it was another big step for the Space Program and we all went to the roof tops to wave and cheer the astronauts in! Space Shuttles are always on time for landing... Yesterday was very different, as my co-workers and I had gone outside to view the shuttle landing, we anxiously awaited the sonic booms. We never heard them in Florida. Life is short, however, God the creator knows each one of us by name before we were born. May you examine your heart and know that God loves you just the way you are. He doesn't require perfection, only a pure heart to worship Him and Him alone. God bless you.

Howdy folks. The 25 yr reunion sounds great. There might not be very many people that remember me but if you do...I,m still as crazy as ever. I perused the other postings and i am curious as to the identity of the FC also. I lived a few blocks from the park, and was in that park people gang, and walked to school but for the life of me cannot figure out who it is. I,ve seen a few of the people on this formers list lately and they are doing great. May all your fish be keepers....have a great year....Andy

Tammy asked me to post the information I gathered from Indian Oak Resort for a possible location for our 25 year class reunion. This way you have information to review, prior to our scheduled meeting on 2/13/03: Indian Oak Resort on 7/3/04 (other dates in June and July are available at this time). $750 down payment required to hold the room/date. $100 cost for security. $548 for appetizers (fresh veggie tray w/dip, fresh fruit & domestic cheese). $22.50 per person for dinner buffet (prime rib, baked potato, honey dijon chicken). $4.95 per person for dessert (cakes, cream puffs, chocolate covered strawberries, mini cheesecakes). If we are planning on 200 attendants that comes to $30.69 per person. We still have the cost of DJ, decorations (if any). We could even consider having an open bar for part of the evening (Premium bar package is $17 per person for 3 hours). I have all the details, which Tammy will have at the meeting. A block of rooms can be reserved at a costs of $85 per night for standard woodview room and $110 for oversized lakeview room. If you have any questions for me, prior to the meeting, you can reach me at jakelchak@antoninsurance.com or call me at 219-926-5376. Hope eveyone is enjoying a good start to the New Year. Julie :)

Jim and I met with Suzi Jaskolski-Matheny over the weekend and yes folks, we think we have the mystery former classmate's identity figured out. So, Rich Ryan...I believe the three of us beat the deadline of the 25 year class reunion. Now, we just need the mystery girl to fess up if she is truly who we think she is. So, mystery girl, let me know if you are willing to give us your identity if Suzi and I say who we think you are. Everyone you mentioned in your bulletin board posting is still alive and kicking. Suzi (Jaskolski)Matheny told me about this website, so of course I had to enter and see what everyone is up too. Wonderful website! I have no clue who the mystery girl is. It's wierd that she mentions my name and all the people I hung around with. It is also wierd that she says she left school her freshman year - she couldn't know me from school then, because I didn't start at CHS until January of our sophmore year! This has my interest too. Will have to discuss with Jimmy (you all remember Jimmy, fellow 79 classmate and my husband of 20 years)and see if he has any clues. Drop me a line, if so inclined, would love to chat with you. :)

Looks like we'll be forming a committee!! We have had around 200 attend the past reunions. Roxann, if you would like to talk to The Hilton Gardens, see if they can accommodate 200-250 and what requirements they have to reserve a block of rooms. If anyone else wants to check out reunion "sites", let me know. We have to be careful about cash deposit requirements, bar expenses, and per plate costs. Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions.

Hello! I'm sitting in my hotel room in Providence RI and started reading the e-mails on Pat's web site. It's good to read the thoughts of my former classmates. However, the one who signs their name former classmate (not to be confused with my former classmates) intrigues me. From what they have written so far I figure she's a girl who went to one of the schools in Chesterton. I like a good mystery unfortunately I'm not very good at figuring them out. I think we should inlist the former leadership of our class (who also graduated in the top third of our class) to figure out who she is. There should be a time limit of coarse... lets say by the 25 year class reunion. If by this time they have not figured out who she is we should have a recall and Put the Junior class president (Shawn Q.) back in power to see if he and his cabinet officers can figure out who she is. Good luck to Rich Raffin and to his cabinet.

Hello class of '79! I really look foward to our 25th reunion only a couple of years away. I posted on this website 17 months ago and as always, time marches on. I am very hapily married to Kim (Hallberg) class of '83. Next year will mark 20 years. My 17 year old son Brandon is a senior at CHS. He is a Sandpiper and I am very proud of him...(this group is amazing, nationally ranked, professionally choreographed and the most outstanding vocal high school group I have heard to date.) He will be joining the Air Force next Summer. My 13 year old 7th grader, Chris, is currently playing football for CMS (that's Chesterton Middle School, i.e. the old high school for those of you not up on Chesterton news). I have run into or have seen numerous classmates over the last year, including Vic Massette at Lakeshore Cafe. I keep contact with Steve Spencer, who currently lives in Indianapolis and works for the city. Recently at a family reunion, I had a nice talk with Dean Peterson's parents who are wonderful people (by the way, Dean I want your job!). Bill McWhorter & I coached our sons together a few years ago. I see Roxann Walker around town occasionally & I, too, think that the Hilton Garden Inn would be a good place for our 25th. A couple of times a week, I see Dr. Emily Senay on the CBS Morning News (great job, Emily - we're all proud of you!). If anyone has heard from Joe Parr, or knows of his whereabouts, please email me as I would like to contact him. I am still serving as a Deacon at Chesterton Southern Baptist Church as well as directing music and teaching Sunday School. I hope you can all make it to our 25th - I will post again as "time marches on".

Just want to say "Hi!" I think that the new Hilton Garden Inn in Chesterton would be a good place to consider for the class reunion. I wonder if we could get a reduced rate for rooms there for people coming from far away. If you could give me a head count of how many people are in our class, I would be willing to talk to them about it. I also would like to be involved on the committee again. Just let me know what you need me to do and when.

It seems that a number of people are interested in having a 25th Class Reunion. We need suggestions on where you might want to have it and when. We will need to form a committee, check the places out, and reserve the space shortly after the first of the year. I would not be opposed to having it at Strongbow's again. What do you all think?

10/9/02
I also left chesterton, but in middle school. You have a great web site. It sounds as if the other former classmate has a real problem with chesterton and should not be asking about people if they really dont care. Whats wrong with region rat? maybe you should not get on this web site if you can't handle your past. Keep up the good work Pat!

Just read Pat Kelly's list of things to know if you are a "Region Rat". I am defintiely not one because I do not recognize most of those statements-- THANK GOD FOR SMALL FAVORS!!!!! By the way, excuse my ignorance, but who exactly is Pat Kelly? I do not recognize the name? Anyway, in answer to Laurie Lane Stewart's posting-if I had or do have a sister living in Jansen Beach, Oregon I would not know about it. Nor would I care

If "Former Classmates" sister used to live in Janzen Beach Oregon, I know who you are. Cant believe she lived so close to me! Teddy Adams is in Florida and I saw Terry a few years ago. Susie, you can e-mail me at work. lstewart@ussuites.com If I am right about Former classmate I hope she does to.

The message from "Former Classmate" has piqued my curiosity as I hung out with just about EVERYONE on that list. The Adams Twins (whoa!), haven't seen them in years. Jamie Groff (Violanti) is still in town as are all of the Politanos. I believe Cary Groff is living in Florida. I ran into Suzy Matheny (Jaskolski) last year at the Oz Parade. Laurie Lane - I use the computer at work so I can't give out my e-mail address. God knows I'm probably the only person left on the planet who doesn't own a computer OR a cell phone! But I loved hearing from you. I'll keep checking the site for clues to the identity of the "FC". Take care everybody!

Sorry about last posting, got interrupted! Former Classmate Most of you don't know me, I left Chesterton my freshman year and have only been back breifly since. My husband came across your website one night while playing around and it has aroused my curiosity. Maybe it's beyond my time but what exactly is a "Region Rat"? I grew up with most of you that went to Westchester Middle school and I recognized a lot of names in the class listing but I see you grew considerablily since my departure. I choose not to give my name because of family issues but some of you may be able to figure it out due to the people I choose to ask about. Does anyone out there know about the following poeople: Vicky Comegys Julie Goslin Jamie Groff Cary Groff Beth Elliott Dino Wayne The Adams twins The Underwoods Teresa Ling Underwood Ted Penfold Joe Politano Mercedes ? Laurie Lane Suzie Long Suzanne Jawarski ( probably spelled wrong) Or any one associated with the park gang! Don't fear, I don't have any motive to get in touch with these people directly, I just want to hear that they are alive and well!

Hey All! I haven't been on this site in a year and thought I'd check in! I gotta tell ya.....I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I am a true Region Rat as I could identify with every single one of Pat's comments. Yes, I'm still living here in town. I work for the Visting Nurses in Michigan City. Was also tending bar part time at Aaron's Mortgage Inn on Broadway. I've seen a few of you in there! It's great to read everyone's e-mails and to reminisce. Shawn Quigley - congrats on the birth of your 4th son! He shares my birthday as well (9/11). Jeff Reboy is still around. He lives in the Pines with his wife Darrah Castle. I've gone riding on Chuck Peterson's Harley a few times. He's living out in Burdick. Terri Jett & I hooked up the other night when she had horseshoes. Laurie Lane - I'm sorry I missed you at the 20th!! At the time, I was dating Bill Poparad (class of 78) and we had a huge 4th of July party. (In retrospect, I wish I would have come to the reunion!!) Take care everyone. I'll be checking in again.

My cousin (Jim Jones) just called me and let me know about the site, What a great job you have done. Somehow I was not on the mailing list for the 20th reunion, maybe next time. The #1 question I get asked when I bump into someone from school is "Are you still married to Mark?" The Answer - "YES" yes we are still married and by the time we have our 25th class reunion, Mark and I will have been married for 25 years! we have 2 daughters and our oldest has blessed us with a grandson that we adore. I teach sewing classes to women that have purchased the New Home Embroidery Machines (New Home being a brand name), Mark owns and operates a semi. We have had our trials but thankfuly, we feel like we have made it! On another note, Sadly, I did not see her name on the "In memory of" link, so I wanted to let those that knew her know that Stacy(Campbell)Chupp died on April 10th 2001 when we were in school she was a great friend of mine and many others. I would appreciate it if you would add her name to the link.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE A REGION RAT FROM CHESTERTON IF. . .

(Please post your own if...'s above)
*
When you are on vacation, you tell people you are from Chicago.
* Over half of the people on your street have some type of basketball hoop.
* When you meet new people, you are ashamed to say that you live in Indiana, so you feel the need to mention that you only live 20 minutes from downtown Chicago. (if it takes you more than 50 minutes to get there, you either drive like a grandpa, or you take the train)
* You have mastered the art of driving around looking for something to do, never actually finding anything worth while.
* At age 20, 3/4 of the girls you went to school with were either pregnant, had one or more kids, or were married.
* You have never heard an Indiana radio station, or seen an Indiana TV station unless you were attending I.U., Purdue, or Ball State, or traveling to one of them to party.
* You consider your "home teams," the Bears, the Bulls, the Cubs and/or Sox, and the Blackhawks, NOT the Pacers, and the Colts
*
You know several people that actually made it onto the Bozo show while they were still kids and you wish that they'd quit bragging about it 35 years later!
* You know all the side streets from Portage to Valpo, and from U.S.30 to Lake Michigan.
* You try to avoid going into GARY, for any reason, unless you’re visiting relatives there, but then you specify which part you are from so that people won't think you live in one of "the bad parts," (i.e., I live in Miller, or I'm from Black Oak, or I stay in Calumet Township).
* In order for you to see the stars at night, you have to drive 30 miles south.
* You still know people who are 30 and wear tight rolled, white washed jeans, have a mullet cut, and they still think they are cool.
* Using 6 degrees of separation, you can find at least one friend that drives a Camaro, or a Mustang.
*
There are no corn fields anywhere near your house.
* Someone in your family has worked at one or more of the steel mills.
* Someone in your family has been laid off at one or more of the steel mills.
* When you refer to the lotto, you aren't referring to the "Hoosier lotto," but the Illinois lotto.
* You know there are a million famous people that have come from the region. i.e. Michael Jackson and all the other Jackson's, Alex Karass, etc..
* Your favorite holiday movie is "A Christmas Story."
* You remember when they were filming "Natural Born Killers" at the Hammond police station.
* Oil tanks are more common than trees in your neighborhood.
* You don't know anything about farming...at least not legal farming.
* You call the interstate the "Toll road."
* You know what good pizza tastes like, and its not Papa John's.
* Running red lights is normal!
* You know the night sky is not black, its orange!
*
You know roads are just a place for trains to park across.
* The only time you actually stop at a blinking train stop is if the train is moving at a high rate of speed and is less than 5 car lengths away from you.
* You think bridges were invented to cross railroad tracks, not rivers.
* You measure distance in minutes instead of miles.
*
You understand what "Lake-Effect" is.
* You don't pronounce the 's' in Illinois and you get aggravated when people do.
* You know that the DNR rangers have as much legal power as a state cop since they arrested your friends for drinking at Dune State Park.
* School isn't cancelled unless there is at least 20 feet of snow on the ground
* You don't drink soda, you drink pop.
* You can see downtown Chicago from the lake, yet it takes an hour to get there!
* You like White Castle.
* Your bumper is rusted from road salt.
* You know that beaches exist in places other than Florida and California.
* You used to think all amusement parks were called "The Enchanted Forest"
* Even if you went to school three hours away, you still couldn’t help but watch WGN news on cable each night.
* You end sentences with unnecessary prepositions ("Where is my coat at?" or "I want to go with!")
* A trip to Valpo isn’t any big deal
* There is only one LAKE, everything else is a pond.
* The "northern lights" are the flames from Amoco's refinery.
* You think anything south of US-30 is "Southern Indiana"
* 588-2300-EMPIIIIIIIRE
* The saying: “We’ll make Alpo out of Valpo” brings back great memories!

Hello again, Classmates. Just a note to say hello. My wife and five kids (not a misprint) live here and I work for a great Boss. The pay isn't great but the retirement is out of this world. I've been a minister for nearly a year now here in Elwood Indiana (Don't laugh, it's true, really, I'm not kiddin') and I visit the sight here often to see who's been tapping out their hellos. Got a few e-mails from Val Yarber and she's still as wonderful a person as ever. Got one from Jenny MacElfresh and hope that her kids are doing fine. Heard from (Disco) Tony Yocum and he is still as good natured a man as he always was. Steve Allmon e-mailed me and it's good to know some good people stayed behind to keep the pride of '79 in our home town. In the two and a half years I attended Chesterton HS before graduating I made some great memories and knew some wonderful classmates. I can't think of any time the kids in our class didn't pull together and although we were a large number of students it seemed that everyone knew everyone else and made our school a great place to be. Now, as the years have passed and we have gone our separate ways, I look back and it only brings smiles when I think of the people I've known from there. Sock hops in the cafeteria after ball games, Talent shows in the auditorium, and do you remember 'OPEN CAMPUS?' My thanks go out to those who have created and maintain this web sight and to those, our classmates (friends) of the past, who visit it to just say hello. Every time someone logs on I know they do so to bring back the memories of great times, good friends, long hair, and short summers and, for a moment, go back to the carefree days when we only had to worry about the next math test, who we would date come Friday night, and how many care free sugarless gum facsimilies we could do in English Lab to win the England Dan and John Ford Coley concert. I'll close remembering with a smile those friends who are no longer with us, greatful for those who have maintained lifelong friendships, and wait in anticipation for those who will renew friendships of the past. Congratulations Class of 1979. We've become good people in this world thanks to our parents, teachers, and most of all EACH OTHER! e-mail revjbsii@hotmail.com

Hello fellow classmates and Happy New Year! As always, I'm glad to see the continued use of the CHS Class of '79 website. My wife Vicki and I added our 4th child to our list of accomplishments in 2001. Albert McKinley Quigley is our 4th boy to boot, born on that fateful day, September 11, 2001. He certainly was our silver lining to a very grey day. I'm gratefully still employed with Alcatel USA and enjoying my work from home sales job down here in Boilermaker land, Lafayette. I travel fairly often around the state of Indiana, Ohio and sometimes Michigan. Nice to hear from you Dwain Kester. Hopefully we'll get to see you at the 25th reunion. I too had been wondering about Jeff Reboy. The 20th was such a good time, I'm hoping we are going to be able to expand on the attendees for this next one. Kevin Wagner, that was some list you put together. I guess I had forgot what a sense of humor you have. Those of us with thinning hair, spouses well beyond 30, and "stuck" in Chesterton or nearby in Indiana surely can see your tongue-in-cheek humor is just your way to have a little lighthearted fun with your old classmates, right? Nothing like a little electronic tit for tat. Anyway, hope you all have a great and prosperous 2002. Shawn

Greetings Hoosiers! Once again it's that time of year where we all reflect on that we are so thankful for. One year later....back by popular demand...My top 10 things I am thankful for this Holiday season. 10. I am very thankful that my former 20 something wife who just turned 30 is still a babe! 9. I am thankful for my 2 adopted children, HipCat who's 1-1/2 years old , and BeBop, just 2 months old. 8. I will always give thanks for the 1997 California Cabernets which give us so much pleasure. 7. I am even more thankful for the 1960 Inglenook Cabernet my wife has given me permission to purchase for my wine collection. 6. I am thankful for the invention of both Prozac and Ritalin, since they both help me get through the day. 5. I am still thankful for the crush I continue to have on Tammy Knutson. 4. I am very thankful that I still have a full head of hair. 3. I am so very thankful that I moved away from Chesterton. 2. I am thankful that I will be wearing Birkenstocks, shorts and a Tie Dyed shirt on Christmas Day, after taking a dip in the hot tub. 1. I am even more thankful that my former 20 something wife who just turned 30 still thinks that I am a "Hottie"! Wishing everyone the best this holiday season. Cheers! Kevin

Hello everyone! It's been one year since I submitted my last entry on the CHS Class of 79 web page and boy have things changed. Well the biggest change is that I'm once again a father and it's just as cool the second time around. My wife and I had a baby boy six months ago and named him Kyle Logan Kester. He's a very handsome little boy and everone who see's him says he looks like a "Gerber Baby." Obviously he gets his good looks from his father, ha. If you would like to see a picture of my little cuttie, check out his web page. I update it monthly and it has current pictures of all of us. The address is www.babiesonline.com/babies/k/kylelogan, if you check it out I would really appreciate it if you would sign his guest book, thanks. I really appreciate all of you that contacted me since my last entry and look forward to hearing from more of you in the future. If you would like to shoot me an e-mail you can reach me at KESTERDR@MCRDSD.usmc.mil. Talk to you soon! P.S.- Anyone know how to contact Jeff Reboy?

Hi everyone! It is so good to hear from so many. This is a great website.....A great way to keep in touch especially since it has been two and a half years since the reunion. What's up for the 25th? I am currently working for Lockheed Martin at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. I am involved in rebuilding and refurbishing a launch complex for the next generation Atlas rocket called the ATLAS V. It is a combination of various LM rocket success and of course Russian technology. I am not sure that I understand all the rocket science, that is left up to the experts. I have been in Florida 15 yrs and have become accustomed to the weather. We have our share of warm days. However this is the time of year I really enjoy.... I don't get to visit Cheese town very often only on occasion. I hear it is growing. If any of you ever get down this way..email me: bekavacware@hotmail.com

I recently visited your website and am very impressed with the content. Congratulations for keeping in touch with one another, that's quite an accomplishment. Since leaving Chesterton in 1977, I moved to Carmel, Indiana and graduated from Carmel High School. I attended and graduated from the University of Illinois. I have been employed as a police officer for the Village of Lombard in Lombard, Illinois. My current assignment is in the Investigations Division. In November of 2001, I will be travelling to Japan, at the request of their government to educate their policing and legal system about victims and offenders with developmental disabilities. Every now and I again I view Emily Senay on Channel 5. I believe she's a child psychologist but I'm not certain. I spoke to Karen Lorenz many (16)years ago when she was working at Amoco. I live in North Aurora, Illinois. It was quite interesting to see all of you and the photos of your twentieth reunion. Looks like a blast was had by all! I can be e-mailed at johnsonm@villageoflombard.org. Best Wishes to all of you. Chesterton was a wonderful place to grow up. I visit the Valparaiso area on occasion as my family owns a farm outside of Valparaiso. Once again, my compliments on a great website and best wishes to all of you.

I was directed to this link by an e-mail from the Chesterton Tribune, apparently they found my name on another web site, and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed going through the site! Although I made an "early departure" from CHS, I still remember so many of the names that were listed on the site and wonder what people are up to. Yeah, I dropped out near the end and finished at Portage a semester later (didn't bother with commencement, felt kinda strange.) I eventually made my way to complete a BA in Human Resources Management and have lived in a few different places (Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and currently San Francisco.) I moved out to SF in 1999 to join in on the dot-com debacle. (You do learn things at all stages of your life.) Since losing my job and the promise of untold fortune a year ago, I am working as an HR Manager at an auto parts manufacturing facility in the East Bay. Never got married and spend most of my free time traveling with my family when possible. I wish I had known about the reunion, although technically I guess I wasn't really a part of the ACTUAL graduating Class of '79. It would have been a great time to see so many of the people I spent a lot of time with in those "early days". I looked over the pictures and have to honestly say I can't recognize ANYONE in the pictures but then I guess there are VERY few people that could probably pick me out of a crowd after 20+ years. I make it back to NWI about twice a year to visit my family and always seem to end up in Chesterton for some reason. I was home for Christmas this past year and my parents HAD to drive past the new CHS, pretty nice, but I would love to have the opportunity to go through the old building one more time, I'm sure it looks a lot smaller these days. I guess it would be up to the reunion committee but I would really like to make the list for 2004. I would definitely make the effort to plan a trip back for the opportunity see those of you who remember me. I was saddened to hear about the loss of those that I can only remember as being very young, energetic kids with dreams for their futures. My thoughts go out to their family and friends. If anyone is interested in contacting me I am at: 2130 Harrison Street # 7 San Francisco, CA. 94110 e-mail: kevbew@concentric.net Take care all, look forward to hearing from anyone.

Hi to all my classmates! It's so good to read the updates. I was on the committee and before I continue, I feel compelled to respond to Dwain Kester's note. Dear Dwain, you were on the list. I'm unsure what the mishap was, but I remember your name. I did locate a bunch of the "unknown" addresses, but I apologize on behalf of the 1979 committee. Also, to Tony Yocum ... Tony, I rec'd your message from my Dad that you had called their house. I got it too late, but it was nice knowing of your efforts. The reunion was great! I think next time that we should invite our class teacher sponsors, Mr. Keammerer and Mr. Becking. I think that they'd have a hoot! Also, I am not FORTY yet ... ahhhh, I'm still enjoying my third decade, thank you very much ...after reading most of everyone's updates here on-line. However, it is soon approaching and I will tell all that I am 35 with 5 years experience, thank you very much again! Just an update. I rec'd my x-ray degree and worked a number of years, married fellow classmate Gerry Deiotte, who joined the Air Force, we traveled out west on assignments, I rec'd my nursing degree from UCLA, and then I moved back home since 1992-3. Cheese-town is still small-town USA to me, but is growing, much to the "locals" dismay. I do run into a number of our classmates and WE LOOK GREAT! Well dear people, keep in touch on this site. Hopefully, we will have another meet and greet for our 25th. Take good care of you and God bless! As ever, Carin. (email: hoosiergirl 818@aol.com) :)

Hard to believe it's been almost 2 years since a great reunion! Equally hard to believe is that we're all in our forties. I look forward to a great 25th and am interested in being on the committee. I still live in Chesterton and after teaching for 11 years, I have been out at Bethlehem for almost 5. My wife, Kimberly, is a 1983 CHS grad. My sons, Brandon & Chris, are 16 and 11, respectively. Brandon is currently a sophomore at CHS, where I enjoyed watching him play varsity football last year. Chris is hitting home runs for my little league team out at Liberty Rec. I'm an ordained deacon at Chesterton Southern Baptist Church, where I also teach the adult Sunday School class and direct music. I miss my days in Sandpipers and orchestra and I look forward to seeing all of you in 3 short years. My email is thumbie123@yahoo.com (I call myself thumbie because I dropped a scrap hopper on my thumb that was full of steel a year and a half ago, but after reconstructive surgery, my thumb is fine). P.S. - Jerry Lindquist's son, Ryan, plays 3rd base for my team and Jerry is one of my coaches.

Hello Class. As you can see from Rick. A and Pat K. recent messages, we did get together recently. We pulled out some old photos and remembered some things from over 20 years ago that gave us a good laugh. It was this web site that allowed us to make contact with Rick (Pat and I have been in contact)leading to getting together. That's one of the benefits of this site, people get in touch on an impromptu (a "Mr. Wray's Word Power Class" word) basis. In any case, I thought people should know, Pat Kelley came up with this site, created it, maintains it, and pays the monthly ISP fee and the web registration fee out of his own pocket (approx. $200 per year). I, and I'm sure many others, would be more than willing to help support this by way of annual contributions. I'm not sure of the best way to do this, but I thought if you're interested you post a note or you could drop me or Pat a line. I can be contacted at Shawn.Quigley@usa.alcatel.com Thanks!

It's Amazing what you can find on the internet. As I was looking for schools to pursue a doctoral program, I thought let me see if CHS is on the web. To my amazement there it was, as well as a Class of 79 web site, pretty cool. Well, after about 20 minutes of studying the group picture and trying to figure out who was who, I simply came to the conclusion that I missed one hell of a party. Sorry I wasn't there, but I guess my name wasn't on the mailing list. I'll just have to shoot for the 25th reunion, when certainly no one will recognize no one, ha. For those of you who don't remember, I joined the Marines in 1980 and I've been in the Corps ever since. I will be coming up on 21 years of service in February of 2001. Presently, my wife and I are living in Oceanside California and plan to stay here once I retire from the Marines. If someone could please put me on the invitation list for the 25th reunion, I would be forever grateful. My home address is: 3215 Brightwood Court Oceanside, Ca. 92054 and my e-mail address is: KESTERDR@MCRDSD.usmc.mil. Look forward to seeing you all soon.
